The Case Stages board shows every case as a card in a column for its current litigation stage, so you can see where all your matters stand at a glance. It is the Board view of your Cases list, and the same cases appear in Table view with a Stage column.
The board has nine lanes, left to right:
Lane | What it holds |
No stage | Cases that have no stage set yet. New cases start here. |
Pre-Litigation | Cases before anything has been filed |
Case Filed | Cases where a complaint or petition has been filed |
Discovery | Cases in discovery |
Dispositive Motions | Cases with summary judgment or other dispositive motions pending |
Mediation | Cases in mediation or settlement talks |
Trial | Cases preparing for or in trial |
Appeal | Cases on appeal |
Resolved | Cases that are finished |
Each lane header shows the number of cases in it. A case's stage (where it is in litigation) is separate from its status (Open or Closed).
Open the board
You can open the board from the Cases list or from your dashboard.
From the Cases list
Sign in to Casefleet.
Click Cases in the main navigation.
At the top right of the list, click Board (next to Table).
From the dashboard
Read the board
Each case appears as one card in the lane for its current stage. Scroll sideways to see lanes that don't fit on screen.
Lane header
A colored dot and the stage name
The number of cases in that lane
A ⋯ (Lane options) menu with Hide lane
An empty lane shows the message "Drag a case here."
Case card
Part of the card | What it shows |
Case name | Click it to open the case's Case Home page |
Document count | How many documents (sources) are in the case, for example "3 docs" |
Last updated | How long ago the case was last changed, for example "Updated a year ago" |
Status menu | The case status, Open or Closed. Click it to change the status. |
Move a case to a new stage
You can change a case's stage by dragging its card on the board.
Drag the card
Open the board.
Find the case card.
Click and hold the card, drag it to the lane for the new stage, and let go.
The card moves to the new lane and both lane counts update.
New cases
The Create Case form has no Stage field, so every new case starts in No stage. To place it, drag its card to a lane.
Customize the board
You choose which lanes you see and whether closed or unstaged cases appear. These settings change only what you see. They don't change any case's stage.
Show or hide lanes
On the board, click Customize board.
Under Lanes, check Show for each lane you want to see. Uncheck it for lanes you want to hide.
Click Done.
To hide a single lane faster, click ⋯ in that lane's header and choose Hide lane. To bring it back, open Customize board and check Show again.
You can delete a stage by clicking ⋯ in that lane's header and choosing Delete stage. And you can change the color of every stage for easy reference.
Board options
Option | Default | What it does |
Show cases with no stage | On | Shows or hides the No stage lane |
Show closed cases | Off | Adds cases with a Closed status to the board |
Apply to all your views | — | Uses these lane settings in every saved view, not just the one you're in |
Because Show closed cases is off by default, a case disappears from the board when you change its status to Closed. Turn the option on to see it again.
⚡️ Here's what Casey, our AI Assistant, can do:
List the stages in order, with each stage's name and color, and see which stage a case is in.
Move a case to any stage, or to no stage. Casey can also do relative moves like "the next stage" or "back a stage."
Close a case so it sits in the board's Closed lane, or reopen it into a stage.
Casey can't change stage colors, rename stages, reorder them, or add or delete stages. You'll need to do those in Casefleet's stage settings.
Search, filter and save views
Search and filters narrow the board to the cases you care about. Saved views let you return to that set in one click.
Search
Click the Search cases… box above the board.
Type part of a case name. The board updates as you type.
Filter
Click Add Filter.
Pick a field:

Set the value you want to match. Add more filters the same way.
Save a view
Set up the search and filters you want.
Click the All cases tab.
Save the view. It appears as a new tab next to All cases.
Share a view
Click View Name (example: Active Cases).
Click Share as URL to copy a link to the board with your current filters.
All cases is the default view. It shows every case, subject to your Customize board settings.
Switch between Board and Table view
Click Table or Board at the top right of the Cases page. Both views show the same cases, and your search and filters carry over.
| Board | Table |
Layout | One lane per stage, one card per case | One row per case |
Shows | Name, document count, last updated, status | Name, Status, Stage, Users |
Customize | Customize board (lanes and options) | Columns (choose which columns show) |
Best for | Seeing where cases stand and moving them | Scanning, sorting and selecting many cases |
In Table view, click a column header such as Name to sort by it.
FAQ and troubleshooting
I can't find a case on the board. Check these in order:
Clear the Search cases… box and remove any filters.
Make sure you're on the All cases tab, not a saved view.
Open Customize board and check that the case's lane is set to Show.
If the case is Closed, turn on Show closed cases.
If the case has no stage, turn on Show cases with no stage.
My new case is in "No stage."
- That's expected. New cases have no stage until you drag them to a lane.
A case vanished after I closed it.
- Closed cases are hidden by default. Turn on Show closed cases in Customize board.
Does hiding a lane change my cases?
- No. Hiding a lane only changes what you see. The cases keep their stage and still appear in Table view.
What's the difference between Resolved and Closed?
- Resolved is a stage: a lane on the board. Closed is a status. A case can be in the Resolved stage and still be Open, so change both when a matter is finished.
Can I rename stages or add my own?
- Yes, you can rename the stages by clicking the three dots along the stage name, then choose "Rename". Also, you can add a stage by scrolling to the very right end of the screen and clicking "Add stage", or click Customize board and add a new stage name.
