How AI Assistant Responds to Your Questions

When you ask a question in the AI Assistant chat, the system analyzes all of your case's uploaded source documents and returns a response with key excerpts from relevant materials. The AI has access to OCR and keyword data for each document in your case, as well as context about all your case records.

The AI Assistant is designed to provide specific, evidence-based answers by referencing the actual content in your case files rather than providing general legal advice or information from outside sources.

Understanding Citations in Responses

One of the most valuable features of AI Assistant responses is the inclusion of clickable citations whenever possible. These citations appear as highlighted references within the AI's response text and serve as direct links back to the source material where the information was found.

The AI Assistant can provide different types of citations depending on where it found the information:

  • Source Citations: These link directly to specific locations within your source documents where the AI found relevant information. When you click on a document citation, it will launch the Document Viewer and take you directly to that location in the source document, with the relevant text highlighted and a prompt to create a new fact from the information.

  • Case Record Citations: These reference other records within your case, such as specific facts, entities, issues, or tasks that you've already created. Clicking on these citations will navigate you to that record's location within the app.

This citation system makes it easy to review information in its original context and understand exactly where each piece of information originated.

Types of Information the AI Can Cite

The AI Assistant can reference and cite several types of information from your case file:

  • Source Documents with Document Intelligence: Documents that have been processed through Casefleet's Document Intelligence feature provide the AI with robust, semantic search capabilities. These documents will yield comprehensive responses with precise citations to specific locations within the document.

  • Source Documents without Document Intelligence: Documents that haven't undergone Document Intelligence processing are still accessible to the AI through keyword searches of the original text. However, while the AI can reference information from these documents in its responses, citations are not provided for documents that have not had Document Intelligence performed.

  • Case Data: When the AI references information from your structured case data, it provides citations showing the source of that information. This includes facts, entities, issues, and tasks that you've created in your case file.

Keyword Search Capabilities

In addition to the more robust semantic search possible for documents processed with Document Intelligence, the AI Assistant can also perform standard keyword searches across your entire case file as part of its conversational responses. This search capability extends to facts, entities, issues, tasks, and all source documents, providing comprehensive coverage of your case information.

Documents that have undergone Document Intelligence processing will yield more robust semantic search results, while documents without this processing rely on basic keyword matching against the original text.

Interpreting AI Response Quality

The AI Assistant aims to provide accurate information based on your case documents, but the quality and depth of responses can vary based on several factors.

  • Document Processing Status: Responses referencing documents that have undergone Document Intelligence processing will typically be more comprehensive and include precise citations. Information from documents without this processing may be more basic and may not include specific location links.

  • Citation Density: Responses with multiple citations typically indicate that the AI found substantial relevant information in your documents, particularly when those citations link to specific locations within processed documents.

  • Source Coverage: The AI searches across your entire case file, but the quality of responses depends on the relevance and completeness of your uploaded documents and whether key documents have been processed with Document Intelligence.

Validating Citations and Context

While the AI Assistant is designed to provide accurate citations, you should always review the clickable references to validate accuracy and understand the full context surrounding cited passages. Use of AI features warrants careful review to ensure the source material actually supports the conclusion being drawn.

When reviewing citations, examine the surrounding text in the original document to ensure the cited passage supports the point being made in the AI's response. This verification step is essential for responsible use of AI assistance in legal work.

Tips for Better AI Responses

  • Provide the AI with context regarding your case. Helpful contextual information include:

    • Case type and your role - e.g., "Personal injury case representing the plaintiff"

    • Primary objectives and strategy - e.g., "Seeking $2M in damages for medical malpractice"

    • Key parties and timeline - e.g., "Incident occurred June 2023 involving Dr. Smith at Memorial Hospital"

    • Main legal issues - e.g., "Proving negligence and causation for surgical complications"

    • Current stage and deadlines - e.g., "In discovery phase, trial set for March 2024"

    • Immediate priorities - e.g., "Need help analyzing medical records and expert depositions"

  • Ask focused, specific questions that are likely to have concrete answers in your documents rather than broad or theoretical queries.

  • Use legal terminology and keywords that are likely to appear in your case documents to help the AI locate the most relevant information.

  • When you receive responses with multiple citations, prioritize reviewing the citations that most directly address your specific question.
